This Grebe, not too common in Arizona during summer, is fairly common west of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri. This particular bird had just emerged from a dive for fish, and was trying to dry it's feathers.
This bird, very common in Arizona, is not limited to Arizona. It is found just about everywhere. In some areas is it very rare. It's called an 'acorn' woodpecker, because it stores its food by making small holes in trees and telephone poles and stuffing acorns in the holes.
